Fields of Crops, Breeds of Grapes

<< back

The 650-hectare field of crops of the Pannonhalma-Sokoróalja wine region can be listed among the smaller ones of the 22 wine regions in Hungary. Due to the influence of the Bakony mountain and the Győr basin, the climate of the region is characterised by average heat and light conditions and good precipitation. Wine-growing mostly takes place on forest-soil terrains developed on loess and characterised by high lime-content.

The Winery cultivates a land of 52 hectares, the vineyards are mostly situated on former properties of the archabbey and in the fields of the villages of Pannonhalma, Écs and Ravazd. Planting started in 2001, at present 37-hectare newly planted fields and 15-hectare formerly planted lands provide grapes for the Winery. In the new fields vines are spaced 0.8 metre apart in rows 2.4 metres apart and are trained in the traditional Guyot method. Formerly planted vines are trained in the single curtain method.

As the topographical conditions of Pannonhalma recall those of the Upper Loire Valley or Alsace, on two-third of the cultivated fields we have planted breeds from which high quality, fresh, good to drink wines can be made. We seek to make such wines primarily from Rheinland reisling, sauvignon blanc and Gewürztraminer. When selecting the breeds we also took the historical traditions of the region into consideration, whereupon we decided to grow Italian reisling, ezerjó and sárfehér grapewines in our fields as well. Bearing in mind our guests from all over the world we have also selected international breeds which appear promising in the long run such as chardonnay, pinot blanc, pinot noir, merlot and cabernet franc.
